Kissing scenes are maddeningly hard to write (how many ways are there to say "then A stuck his tongue in B's mouth" without sounding cliched or stupid?). I don't know how people who regularly write pwps do it without repeating themselves all over the place.

By frowning at our word documents and rewritten things a lot. You have to watch yourself and make sure that the kiss matches the mood of the fic. Sometimes you just have to go with what you personally find hot to read even if it is cliched.

There are times though where I just throw my hands up and write 'they kissed passionately/angrily/etc' when I need two characters to kiss again and I'm out of ways to make the kiss interesting. I tend though to try and use things like 'sucked on his/her tongue', 'bit their bottom lip', 'brushed his/her lips against person b's'. If its angry sex I try to mention teeth either scrapping lips or knocking into each other.

That sounds like good advice - the arg factor's probably compounded by the fact that [livejournal.com profile] seanchai doesn't find a lot of kissing scenes all that hot, and I read a lot of romance novels and therefore have tons of purple prose cliches lurking in my subconscious waiting to pounce.

*G* I grew up contently raiding my mother's romance novel closet as pre-teen and teen.

Kissing scenes are one of those YMMV things. I don't know if it's just that people that really like kissing love kissing scenes, or if it has nothing to do with it.

Knowing the general levels of correlation between fictional kinks and RL kinks,I'd guess that people who really like kissing IRL may be predisposed to like kissing scenes, but that there are also plenty of people who don't like kissing in real life but find fictional kissing super hot. Or who love kissing IRL but would rather spork their eyes out than watch it on a movie screen.

We've been watching El Cid in my Muslim and Christian relations class, and the 'love' scenes had me dying with laughter. One of my guy friends in the class wondered if anyone actually thought Heston rubbing his face against Sofia Lorens hair was sexy other than the director.

To characters on tv or in the movies not kissing at times can be sexier. Owen and Gwen's not kiss in Countryside? Guh.

It's why i can't write stuff like that. Sorry, I have nothing constructive to say. Wait maybe i do: Do not use the "..It was all he could do..." without telling us what It is.
I have issues with that phrase.
Um thats all. Sorry

My personal keyboard-smash-arg phrase is "deepened the kiss." That, and comparing any part of the human body to a rosebud. Especially nipples.

From: [identity profile] northstar-rocks.livejournal.com

Oh the rosebud thing! Oh that one drives me nuts for some reason, i haven't figured out why yet, it just does though.
::Crazy idea:: I want to compile a list of things from fanfictions that drive me nuts and write a wonderfully bad story now, using them all, every single thing that irritates me... XD buuuuut i'm to lazy ::shrug::

Heh, I use a porn thesaurus for a lot of stuff when I feel like being clever. Otherwise it's just putting them in different phrases. But yeah, like Kijikun said, it's more like just glaring and growling at it until it behaves. I can't read my own porn fics and be entertained because all I remember is the frustration. >>

Other than that, I have an unhealthy collection of bodice ripping, erotica books that entertain me and give me ideas on how to order my sentences.

What is a porn thesaurus and where might one find one? Mostly because I feel that I need to own something with that awesome a name.

From: [identity profile] jynx.livejournal.com

Alas! No one has ever published one (which, considering the sheer amount of romance writers out there, they should), however, here (http://www.mondoerotica.net/sex-porn-thesaurus.html) are a few (http://www.sex-lexis.com/) I've found helpful (http://www.puncat.com/Adult/Arts/Writers_Resources/index.html). REALLY helped when all I could think of was "thrust" for about everything. ><

Seriously. Now I've got like, 2 books I think would be awesome to write. A Porn Thes. and "So Your Girlfriend's a Slasher" and then sell it at anime cons. *dork* ignore me, I'm rambling. Enjoy the links!

I figure I end up repeating myself a fair bit. *wry* I also do what kiji said, with the adverbs and the phrases describing bits of the kiss. I also use variations on "their mouths/lips pressed together" to break things up when I've used the word "kiss" seven times in a row. :-)

But yeah, kissing scenes are definitely the hardest type of scene to write.

*nods* Give me action sequences any day. Though, if you repeat yourself in sex scenes, you do it well enough that I don't notice.

I always think I've gotten all the excessive repeats out by the time I post, but when I reread my sex scenes, I always notice them again. *facepalm* I kind of depend on the hotness distracting people. *g*

This, ZOMG this.

I've only done like, three R rated pieces with relatively strong erotic content, and by the third I was like, too through. "Ugh, I said this already. I can understand why people default to purple prose."

I'll be like, swimming out of the deep end and back into the shallow end of snark and the odd level look.

Never underestimate the power of bad romance novels to seep into your brain and stay there forever - at least, I put some of the purple prose in sex scene sdown to the fact that a lot of people's first exposure to textual sex scenes comes from romance novels (if it doesn't come from fandom).
