The Fantastic Four is a cute, fun superhero movie, and Ioan Griffid's spaniel hair is as puppy-like as ever. He was a great choice for Reed Richards, since his arms and legs are so long and skinny that he already looks like he's been stretched. It wasn't a very subtle movie (but then, what do you expect when the villain is named "Victor Von Doom"), and the torture/angst quotient was relatively low, as superhero films go, but the Fantastic Four always did have somewhat happier lives than, say, Batman.

There was lots of action, there were things blowing up, the CGI on everyone's powers was well done (Sue Storm's invisibility wasn't quite as good as Skinner in League of extraordinary Gentleman, but she was the film's weak link all around), and the Storm siblings had a decently done sibling relationship. Dr. Doom never quite managed to be as creepily menacing as the Joker or as sympathetic as Doc Ock, but some of the shots where he walks through rooms in his long, black trenchcoat and the lights flicker on and off were pretty atmospheric. And the handful of science geek shout outs (Dr. Doom: "You remember what happens to rubber when you freeze it, don't you, Reed?" Little girl behind me: "What happens, Mommy? What? Is it bad?") were fun, too. Jessica Alba and Ioan didn't exactly make with the chemistry, but it could be because the evil power of her painfully-obviously-bleached blonde hair overwhelmed me every time they went in for a close up. Why, why didn't they either make her a brunette (it wasn't like they didn't change other bits of comic canon) or cast someone who would be believable as a blonde?

Astoundingly, there was very little slashiness in the movie (unless Victor Von Doom and his bitch assistant SmithersLeonard count), despite Ioan's nearly prefect "slash crack" record. Perhaps the directors told him to "turn it down; this is supposed to be a kids movie."
