(as opposed to Holliday recs--that was the last recs post)

Below are a few of my favourite holiday season fics, past and present.

A Desk of Fiddles by NotTasha (Mag7)
It's Christmas Eve, and Ezra and Vin are snowbound in an abandoned farmhouse with nothing to do but sit around and wait for morning. So they decide to have their own Christmas celebration, complete with caroling, harmonica playing, and the contents of Ezra's hip flask. Meanwhile, an increasingly paranoid Chris Larabee is certain that the two missing regulators are lying dead in a ditch somewhere.

Who's Afraid of Red, White, and Green By Lady Cat and Estepheia (Angel season 5)
It's the holiday season at Wolfram and Hart, and things are not going well for Angel and the gang. A mysterious giant Christmas tree appears overnight in the lobby, and it's all downhill from there. I think my personal favorite moment is when several lawyers get turned into reindeer.

Several collected here and the rest scattered throughout her recent journal posts.
All the delightfully twisted holiday Mexico filk you could want.

And one published novel rec, just because more people should read Barbara Hambly's New Orleans series:
A Free Man of Color by Barbara Hambly
It's carnival season in 1833 New Orleans, and octoroon courtesan Angelique Crozat has been strangled at a masked ball. It's up to free black musician Benjamin January to find the killer, before the New Orleans police force decides to make him a convenient scapegoat. Helping (and hindering) him in this endeavour are his best friend Hannibal, the consumptive violin player, his sisters, Dominique the courtesan and Olympe the voodooienne, his opinionated busy-body of a mother, Livia Levesque, his former piano class pupil Madeleine, now the widow of the dead woman's lover, the unkempt American police lieutenant, Abishag Shaw, and Augustus Mayerling, a Prussian fencing instructor with a dark secret.

The first in a series of historical mystery novels, A Free Man of Color does a wonderful job capturing the atmosphere and attitudes of 1830s New Orleans, and a society divided between French Creoles, Americans, free blacks, and slaves. Benjamin January, unsure of where he stands in the stratified and ever-shifting world of free colored and slaves, is an engaging and sympathetic main character, and the supporting characters are fun too, especially Shaw, who hides a sharp policeman's mind beneath his grimy, tobacco-spitting exterior, and Hannibal, who is adorably long-suffering and snarky. Plus, there's gender-queerness and an eventual lesbian relationship.

And for a final rec, everyone should go and see A Series of Unfortunate Events, both because Jim Carey is a wonderfully entertaining Count Olaf, and because the pictures shown during the end credits look like they were drawn by Edward Gorey (and because Jude Law's ever-so-sexy voice provides the narration).

I've read about half of these, but the rest sound fun. Good to hear that the movie was good, I havn't got to see it thus far.

Sadly, I think my favourite part of the whole movie-going experience was seeing the trailer for Steven Spielberg's remake of War of the Worlds. I could barely contain my glee at the prospect.

And the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory trailer was bad either.

I've seen both online- they look fun. Though I can't help wondering about War of the Worlds- I can't quite see them sticking with the orginal ending.
And a quote for you, just cause it fits.

"These shows are designed to be in people's lives, in their fiction, in their dreams, in their porn, in everything." - Joss Whedon
