Yesterday afternoon, in a minor orgy of spending, I bought myself a silver celtic knotwork ring (to replace the one I lost down the shower drain in Tinker last year) and the soundtrack to Chicago. Which I have been listening to nonstop for the past fourteen hours (well, minus the seven or so hours I slept).

I love my new Chicago CD. Even more than I love my new burned copy of the soundtrack toDesperado.

I don't love Bush. Go home Bush. Nobody likes you. You go squish now. [/childishness] I can't believe that they're spending £7 million (or is it 7 million euro? Either way it's unbelievable) on security for his visit with Tony Blair today. If I were a British taxpayer, I'd be sincerely displeased. As an American, I'm instead displeased with his stance on Massachusetts' new law allowing gay marriages. *cheers Massachusetts*

Please, God, don't let him run for re-election. If he forces me to vote Democratic in my very first Presidential election (that I can vote in), I will never forgive him.

Oh, and the small part of me that has seen too many Bush/Blair politislash icons/posts is sniggering uncontrollably right now. "Ooh, look! He's 'visiting' Tony."

merp?? he's already gathering monies for his campaign war chest.

I believe the current total is $83.9 million. For his re-election primaries, during which no-one else is running against him.

Gah. ::goes to peer at blogforamerica and crosses fingers::

Nooo! *wails* That means I'll have to do choose the lesser of the two evils and vote for the Democratic candidate. My family will disown me.

I'm gonna have to break out the "Vote Voldemort. Why settle for a lesser evil?" poster again.

is voting for Dem. really that bad? ::is curious:: I mean, it's secret ballot anyways, yes? Or is it the other issues like gun control and security?

From: [identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com

Part the other issues and part the fact that my whole family is traditionally Republican. I'm just a wierd, pro-Environment, pro-Gay rights Republican.

Mainly it's because I have a lot of active duty or retired military among my family and friends (which would be the security part, I guess). That said, I don't think I want Bush to remain in charge of said military friends/family. Because his decision making skills=bad.

My dad's retired Air Force and we're all Dems, so the two don't have to go together. If you look at the way the Republicans have treated veterans, you can get a pretty good idea of why my dad votes Democrat.

Also look long and hard at the way the right wing has used former POW Jessica Lynch - first planting false stories about her in the media to bolster support for the war, and then, when it came out that those stories weren't true, using her capture and (purported - she refues to talk about it, although the new biography says she was) rape to argue that women shouldn't be allowed in the military, and looking down their noses at her because she may have been photographed topless. (Wow, that is some more run-on sentence!)

Sorry, didn't mean to rant. . .

Um, yeah. I'm reminded of the first female American soldier who was taken POW (who, contrary to public opinion was not Jessica Lynch), Col. Rhonda Cornum, who was assaulted during the Gulf War. When an interviewer said that surely women in the military were facing a risk that their male counterparts didn't, she looked him straight in the eye and said she had seen no evidence that men who are raped feel any better about the situation than women do.

This is a *very* good article about women POW's and rape, with quotes from Rhonda Cornum:

Good for her. The media often overlooks the fact that a significant percentage (like 10%, 15 %--I can't remember exactly, but I think either you or Hillary gave me the exact statistic once) are men. Women are, sadly, probably more likely to be raped, but that doesn't mean it doesnt happen to men as well. Particularly in POW and other prison-type circumstances.

dunno. There's always Clark who used to be a general, tho I don't know his specific stance on it. Personally, I'm for Dean (you can find his foreign policy statements here). He's promising not to reduce the defense budget, just reallocate, and he's pro-gun.

::rereads statement above and twaps self:: really tho, don't choose Dean if he doesn't feel right to you, but know that there's Democratic alternatives to Bush, because really, we need to get the guy out of office...

Yes, we do. Among other things, he's giving other countries a very negative impression of the US. And he's a little too religious fundamentalist for my tastes.

(*singing*)

You!
I wanna take you to a gay bar!
I wanna take you to a gay bar!
I wanna take you to a gay bar!
To a gay bar,
Gay bar,
Gay bar!

Let's start a war!
Start a nuclear war!
At the gay bar,
Gay bar,
Gay bar!

I get such a stupid kick out of that video....

7 million euro, I think; I read the figure 4 mill sterling, which seems about right. In any case, it's outrageous, as has been the various security etc demands of his camp throughout the whole debacle.

Movie soundtrack or musical? I like the former for Catherine Zeta Jones' vocals, but I have to have the musical version for 'My Own Best Friend', tragically cut from the film.

The movie soundtrack--I wanted the version with Queen Latifah singing "When You're Good to Mama." Becase she does an absolutely awesome job. That woman can sing.
