I have discovered that parts of the Maiden Rose OVA are uploaded on youtube (for the uninitiated - think of every guilty-pleasure kink you've ever had. It's probably in this manga. Along with weapons-kissing and WWII-style tanks. And the dub-con/non-con endemic to yaoi manga is for once portrayed as unhealthy and screwed up instead of romantic... while, you know, still existing for those who like that sort of thing), and I now have the third Obsidian and Blood novel in my hot little hands.

If you like mystery series with well-developed settings that aren't modern-day, mythology of all kinds, asexual protagonists (it's implied to be because of supernatural reasons, but still) and novels where the protagonist gets the living snot kicked out of him at least once a book, you will like Aliette de Bodard's Obsidian and Blood books. Just consider yourself warned for self-mutilation, and animal and human sacrifice. And probably other things I haven't thought of, too.

They're from the same publisher as Lavie Tidhar's steampunk adventure-pulp series (The Bookman and Camera Obscura). I think Angry Robot is fast becoming one of my favorite smaller SF/F publishing houses. Dan Abnett's Triumff (also an Angry Robot books) was fun, too, if a lot campier and goofier than de Bodard and Tidhar's books, and everything I've read so far from this publisher has done interesting or creative things with genre bending or been a fresh take on a genre.
