So, can any of you explain to me what the heck has happened to Thor fans on tumblr?  The last time I saw reactions like this to an actor getting married, it was LOTRPS and J2 fandom over Orlando Bloom dating.. I forget which actress, and Jensen Ackles marrying whomever it is he's married to (Daneel Harris?  Or was that Jared Padalecki?), and in those cases the guys were the center of huge, tinhat-filled RPS fandoms.

Also, what happened on on the Avengers kink meme?  I stop checking it or a few months, and suddenly there's (possible?) plagarism and long discussion threads on The Meme That Must Not Be Named about whether or not it really was plagarism wherein no one actually seems to know anything about it.

According to the mod:

On Sunday I was contacted by the original author with the complaint. Evidence was presented in a line-by-line comparison of the fill in question and a fic previously posted to this meme. There were multiple places where entire paragraphs appeared to have been copied and roughly edited. These instances were unique enough to call the fill into question. The original author and I discussed their options and they asked that I comment noting the similarities and asking that it be edited before posting elsewhere. The original author specifically requested to remain anon.

The comment was made and I was contacted by the filler to discus the matter. The filler was provided a link to the other fic. After reading the fic, the anon agreed that the similarities were striking and the accusation understandable, but maintained that the fic was not something they had previously read. The filler asked that apologies be passed to the original author, with assurances that it was a coincidence. Understandably with the number and type of similarities, the original author did not accept this.

Options were presented to the anon, including the choice to continue posting with only a warning. The original author expressed disinterest in having the fill removed, but the filler requested that it be deleted.

Due to the wishes of the original author I am not at liberty to present the proof as it was shown to me. Any farther information will only be released at the author's request.

Only information didn't come out in that detail initially, and everyone got all up at arms and declaired that this story couldn't possibly be plagiarised as they didn't think it was so there. Rinse and repeat sixteen times.

That would explain why I didn't recognize anything familiar when I went and skimmed the fic (well, the first couple bits of it - it was deleted before I got a chance to read through the whole thing). If the fic that was plagarized was posted on the kink meme rather than to the c_i comm, I might not have read it.

I'm glad the mod and both authors decided to keep everything anonymous. If user names were attached, the wank would probably continue on for ages rather than dying out in a couple of days, as I suspect (well, hope) it will. With no names attached, nobody will feel compelled to jump in and defend their friend/attack on behalf of their friend, and I suspect the author of the copied fill wouldn't have reacted nearly as well if she'd been posting un-anon with her reputation on the line (offering to take down the fic pretty much without protest rather than throwing a drama-fit of injured innocence and flouncing is practically a best-case scenario for people caught plagarizing).

I'm choking with laughter and glee over their tears. Same thing with them discovering that Fassbender (the guy who played Magneto) is back with Zoe Kravitz. I've never grown so gleeful on despair.

I've read the fandom wank report now, and the quotes in it from people who are so terribly hurt and offended that he "hid" the fact that he's married are way funnier than they should be.

Didn't Fassbender and Kravitz's break-up involve him hitting her? Why would you ("you" in this case being the fangirls who were upset at him being "taken") want to get together with a guy who it sounds like very probably knocked his previous girlfriend around?

Fassbender had a falling out with his previous gf before Kravitz (I am ashamed that I know this fact). I can't remember her name, but not Kravitz. Since it's all alleged, and charges were not filed, etc (I don't know the story), but long story short, it's not Kravitz.

Man, tumblr is amazing. Like, on one hand, it's good for picspams and videos and the rest. On the other hand, the fans are crazed.

My first reaction when I heard that Hiddleston was married was "good on him". Then I heard the fans were throwing shitfits and that turned into hysterical laughter. GUESS WHAT TINHATTERS? HE'S AN ACTOR AND THEY HAVE LIVES TOO

Who do they tinhat ship him with? LotR and J2 ended up with tinhats because in both cases the actors worked on the same project for years (and bandom I presume has them because of the whole making out on stage thing and also spending years working together).

And if it's not about RPS and "Noes! My OTP!" then I really don't get it, because while I can understand "Die for our ship" rage, non-RPS fan outrage and woe just seems... pointless. It's like when fangirls freak out upon learning that a hot actor is gay. "Oh no, my chance of ever dating a man who's never met me, probably will never meet me, and who's possibly fifteen years older than I am to boot has just gone from 0.00001% to zero!" I mean, I used to occasionally think that it would be cool to marry Prince William and become Queen Elizabeth III of England when I was in elementary school and found out that the future king of England was the same age as I was, but I also knew even when I was eight that that was about as likely to actually happen as winning a billion dollars in the lottery or developing magical powers overnight.

Most of the outrage on the meme seems to be that the mod didn't post the juicy details right away. You can find the whole thing here. It wasn't all that wanky, unless you count the author's injured innocence. (NGL, it's been kind of annoying me all week, watching people leap to defend the anon without a shred of evidence or information. )

My guess is that the fact that no one but the two authors and the mod had access to the evidence made it look like a case of "he said/she said" to many people rather than something clear-cut and proven (when apparently it was proven, but not publicly), so people reacted according to what their previous experience with plagiarism claims was (hence, either completely believing it because their last fandom had a serial plagiarist who pulled this kind of thing all the time right down to protestations of innocence and fake apologies, or going "well, the last supposed case of plagiarism in my previous fandom was someone who'd written a pirate AU claiming that any and all AUs where the characters were pirates was plagiarizing her; how do we know it wasn't just common h/c tropes the author only thought were copied from her?").
