Two down, two to go. I've signed up for my English and HIstory department classes (a process that included standing in line outside the History building in the rain for forty minutes this morning), so now I've only got the final form for the International student office to do. Old English class, I think, will be really fun, and Celtic Lit. looks promising as well. I'm not sure about Medieval Celtic Saints, but it does have several cute guys in it, including Jeff & Spike, the Saint Mary's College duo who seem to be everywhere I go (Early Start Irish Lit. class, Old English, Celtic Saints, ect.). Liz from Ohio, my flatemate, says that this is a sign from God that I need to have wild monkey sex with both of them. Hey, any group of guys that can babble about the Odyssy and Beowulf (not to mention comic books) have definate appeal.
And now, for something completely different, that y'all actually care about: recs. And a minor rant.
Having recently been reminded of how much I love westerns, I've started browsing my way through the Magnificent Seven fandom (the television show, not the 1960s movie, though it is based on the movie, which is in turn based on the Japanese film The Seven Samurai).
Mag7's an unusual fandom in that it's almost more two convergeant fandoms that one single one: there's fic set in the original Old West universe (my favourite) and fics set in a very well developed communal AU called the ATF universe, in which the seven gunslingers are modern-day law enforcers. Both verses have a hefty doese of slash, but I find I actually prefer gen fic here, since those tend to be longer and more plot oriented, and verging on that buddy-fic-that-dances-damn-close-to-the-slashy-edge territory.
Good example: "When Shadows Fall" by Joby, Deb, and Desertsage. Hellaciously long and filled with beautiful characterization, it centers mainly around Buck, Vin, and Chris, but none of the seven, or even the supporting characters, like Mary Travis or Casey Wells, are neglected.
There are a few anachronisms, especially in the earlier chapters, and a sprinkling of grammatical mistakes/incomplete sentences/stilted narration in the first third-to-half of the fic, but it improves greatly in later chapters, and the plot and characterization are good enough that they didn't phase me. And there is h/c, oh yes, there is, plus a very nasty quartet of villains.
Also good are:
Anything by Katie, who has some great stories centered around Buck & JD, and anything by Greenwoman, who does mostly shorter, Ezra-centric stories, set in both universes.
There are gunfights, there is angst, there are seven guys to drool over (though I find I have to spend a good five minutes staring at cast photos before I can read any Chris/Vin slash, so as to expunge the evil Yul Brynner/Steve McQueen images from my brain, as they played Chris & Vin in the movie). Sadly, though, there is also a noticeable trend that gives me scary Gundam Wing fanfic flashbacks--the over-use of epithets to refer to characters. Yeah, I know there are seven of them, but they do all have names, and seeing Vin Tanner referred to as "the tracker," "the ex-bounty hunter" and so forth repeatedly gets old. I've yet to come across my ultimate pet peeve, authors constantly referring to people by their hair colour/style, though. However, I am fast developing a new and even more powerful pet peeve: authors who refuse to realize that "shootist" is not a bleeding word! "Marksman" is a word. "Sniper" is a word. "Rifleman" and "gunman" and "gunslinger" are words. "Shooter" is a word, though it's usually used to refer to alcoholic snacks made with jello. "Shootist" is not a word.

Would you have any links as to cast photos, cause i too like to look at what i'm reading about before i embark on my fanfiction journey ^_^
You have just named some of my absolute pet peeves. "Braided American" and "Braided Baka" are the pinacle of my peeves. Don't the writers know that people can't be braided? Only hair can!!!! Jesus Christ on a Crutch!!!!!

There are a few here</a., though they're small and sucky. *blinks* If one of the seven gunslingers is a girl, they must have been played by a crossdresser, 'cause all of the actors are guys (I 've actually never seen the show, just the movie--but I've never seen the end of Gundam Wing either, and that didn't keep me from reading fanfic).
