Update on the sibling front: Sarah called from Hawaii (where she spent Spring break, the lucky little ho) and filled us in on her tropical island experience. She had lots of fun--went swimming, watched cute civilian guys surf, went to the Pearl Harbor memorial and was slightly irked by the Japanese tourists there (a direct quote: "You know, if Americans went and posed for pictures at Hiroshima, people would bitch about it like crazy."). Unfortunately, all of the military flights from Hickam field to California were cancelled, so she and her classmates have got to take a commercial flight back. However, since a 737 beats the hell out of a C-130, they're not exactly crying.
She's seen Starsky & Hutch too. She also loved it, as I knew she would, being a huge Ben Stiller fan. However, she didn't catch the subtext, as she's also got an amazing ability to ignore slashy vibes of any sort. Which is probably a good thing in an Air Force cadet.
I, who went home for break instead of to Hawaii, went in to be a guest speaker in my Mom's middle school classroom. It's funny--when I was 12-13, non of my peers would have a thing to do with me, but now thirteen-year-olds think I rock. The Cycyle News article majorly impressed them, and the news that college campuses won't let you have pets caused deep and abiding horror. *rubs hands evilly * I also handed out the URLs to FictionAlley and ff.net to some kids who were deeply interested in fanfiction--only to find that two girls already had accounts at the Site That Must Not Be Named. I wonder how long it will be before they discover slash.
I also got to witness the massive consternation caused by my Mom's new pencil policy. She'd been having trouble with kids not bringing pencils to class and then walking off with the pencils she lent them. My Dad, in a stroke of genius, suggested that she bring in those crappy little golf pencils (you know, the two-inch-long ones with no erasers?. Needless to say, no one wanted to use them, much less steal them. I'd bet money everyone remembers to bring their own pencil Monday.
