Damn. I go spend a week on an island at the edge of civilization, and when I get back, I find out that the biggest hurricane since Hugo has hit the east coast and my cat has died.

I kinda wish I'd been there for Isabel, if only for bragging rights and the fact that I wouldn't have been as worried about my family if I'd actually been there with them, instead of on the other side of the Atlantic, looking at photos of Virginia Beach & the Outer Banks being eaten by giant waves on the front page of The Irish Times. Fortunately, everyone back home is fine, though my aunt's basement is flooded.

I'm glad I wasn't there when Nancy died, though. It would have been too painful. She's been my cat for fourteen years, ever since she showed up in our yard one day when I was in first grade. She was my familiar, in a way. I've never loved another animal that much, and I don't think I ever will. *sighs sadly* A warm, purring cat in bed with you is better than a girlfriend. Probably better than a boyfriend, too, but I sadly have no basis of comparison there. And no I have no boyfriend, no girlfriend (though that's my own fault, really) and no cat.

And no computer. And two essays to write, not to mention Pirate's fic. And Johnny Cash died, too. I'm going to go sulk now, or maybe run 5K.

I'm sorry about your cat. You're right, there is nothing like a warm, purring feline with you at night. Glad to hear you weren't affected in any way by Isabel, though - a flooded basement can be repaired, other losses can't.

So sorry about your sweetie, dude. It's hard losing someone you've known for fourteen years, and when it's someone snuggly like a cat or a dog it's even worse.

On the more selfish side, sorry this is the first contact I've had with you since graduation. What's your extension? Otherwise, I can e-mail you for it if you'd prefer.

I have no extension. I am the only human being in Europe with no cell phone. I do have my trusty Hollins email address, though (elowry@hollins.edu).

How's Love Ray coming along? I'm so out of the Manifest Destiny, Iowa loop that it's not even funny.
