[livejournal.com profile] seanchai and I have been watching the old '90s Spiderman cartoon's take on the Venom saga. I have to say, I still don't see what motivates people to write Spidey/Venom (as anything other than creepy non-con), but I totally see the Eddie Brock/Symbiote slash. "You rejected the symbiote, but I have embraced it! We are one now! It brings us pleasure!" etc. etc. The Eddie/Symbiote vibes are even more blatant than the cartoon's Norman Osborn/Green Goblin vibes (Norman Osborn, the man so psychotic and skeevy he can actually sexually molest himself).

I'd forgotten/not realized how much the storylines in the third Spiderman movie came from the cartoon (I swear in the comics he somehow picks the symbiote up during Secret Wars, while everybody's running around in space for no discernible reason), right up to the inclusion of John Jameson and the symbiote meteor landing in the park (and the symbiote oozing all over Peter while he slept, and the hanging-upside-down looking at his reflection in a sky-scraper window shot).

Also, I can't believe I forgot that Eddie and the symbiote actually spawned together and produced Carnage. Who calls Venom "Dad."

Ah, Marvel.

The best part of the Carnage animated storyline, however, is that Tony and Rhodey show up in it, in the Iron Man and War Machine armor. They actually do a decent job on Tony's characterization, too.
