Lo these many years ago, when I was a mere lass of eleven, I pulled Sharpe's Rifles off a shelf in the St. Mary's County library and fell in love (and lust) with Sharpe and Harper. (And Teresa--mustn't fotget her. After finishing Sharpe's Enemy, I refused to read any more Bernard Cornwell books for a solid year, until teh Sharpe eventually drew me back). Then, several years later, I turned on the history channel and caught about two thirds of the BBC version of Sharpe's Company, and instantly fell in ravening lust with Sean Bean (whom I'd never seen before), partly because of the voice and the smile, but also partly because he was playing Richard Sharpe.

And yet, somehow, though I've read almost every book in the series and listened to most of them on booktape as well (actually, I'm listening to Sharpe's Rifle on tape right now), I've never seen one of the Sharpe movies all the way through until tonight, when I finally sat down and watched "Sharpe's Rifles."

And, yeah, they smush the plots of Sharpe's Rifles and Sharpe's Gold into one book, which is slightly irritating, but really, it matters not, because you get to see Sharpe Sean Bean sulk and be bloody. Both of which are things he does very well. Also, Sharpe, Harper, and Teresa (who's in the movie even though she's not in the book so that they can have Sharpe sleep with the same woman throughout the miniseries, concealing how much of a complete slut he is in the books) have definate threesome vibes. And there's one scene where Harper is clearly staring with great intensity at Sharpe's ass. Plus, there's that part where they have rough, violent sex beat the bloody hell out of each other to settle which one of them gets to be on top is in command.

After a bit of debate, those of us watching have decided that Sharpe is probably the uke, despite being nominally in charge the rest of the time, because no. 1: height rule, no. 2: he's the one who's always getting shot/stabbed/beat up in clasic uke style, no. 3: he's got the requisate angsty childhood, no. 4: everyone knows the series slut always doubles as the uke, and no. 5: we can so see him topping from below.

Ah, Sharpe and Harper, you were my first ever slash pairing, and I love you still.

Oh, yeah, and I've written another chapter of my English thesis and and introduction to my History thesis, and it's raining again (have I mentioned how much I hate hurricane season), but none of these facts are as interesting as Sharpe.
