Of course, many will ask if there is such a thing as a good Republican. To which the answer is yes, but the one we elected in 2000 is not precisely a sterling example.

Anyway, in addition to being a slash writer and slash reader (EVOL PRON THAT COULD CORUPT TEH CHILDREN!!!11!ONE), I didn't watch the State of the Union Address last night. I went to see Prof. Downey's concert in the Rat (bar/restaurant in the basement of Hollins' student centre, for non-Hollins people) instead. The flyer said The Chicken Man was going to be there! And it promised Johnny Cash songs! How was I supposed to resist?

I'll read the transcript on the internet, so that I can discuss it intelligently with my classmates and have some more info on which to base my Bush vs. Whomever the Democrats Pick decision next fall.

And now for something completely different (and less likely to make people go "You're a Republican? But they're Eeeevill, and elected Bush, and are closed-minded homophobes and you're a Republican?").

I'm toying with the idea of diving in, surrendering what passes for my social life, and committing myself to a double History/English major. And doing my thesis on Confederate blockade runners during the Civil War (I can see the hellish amounts of research and frustratedly limmited amount of source material now). Since I've also pretty much decided to turn that Civil War X-Men AU idea I had a while ago into original fiction and write a novel, that means that there's probably gonna be lots of time spent doing research in my eventual future. (And that's without taking into account the WWII novel that I truely have to start working on again).

Since I've also got a multi-chaptered PoTC fic plotbunny gnawing on my neck like Bunnicula and a Remus/Sirius OotP AU bunny nibbling at my toes, I really do need to start cracking history books and writing.

Aww, to each their own ^_^. Republicans are, in my experience, little different from any other possible political affiliation. The one in the White House is only a sterling example of a monkey. Otherwise, life goes on. People are interesting.

And that sounds like an AWESOME thesis *_*.

*g* I think most people are aware that the Republican party isn't all bad. Just Dubya's regime. And the last 20 years' worth, perhaps. 'S not like the 'centrist/moderate Democrat' platform's much better, though.

It does look frustrating, but fascinating, with lots of dusting off of old books, eh? But, pardon my ignorance, but shouldn't you be in an excellent part of the country for that sort of thing?

Well, yeah, most people can seperate Bush Jr. (and those other, even worse people--ex: Michael Savage, the terrifyingly fanatical AM radio host who makes Rush Limbaugh look moderate--and he's published a book now. Cower in fear) from the rest of us, but there are times (like yesterday, or whenever Bush does something particularly annoying) when my campus becomes a giant, sucking morass of anti-Republican sentiment.

shouldn't you be in an excellent part of the country for that sort of thing?
Yeah. *laughs* Virginia probably has more material on the Civil War (museums, archives, entire sections of library shelving...) than any other state. Even most of the battlefields are still there (you can still see some of the trenches around Richmond). The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond is probably a good place for me to start looking.

Bush does bear a disturbing resemblance to a monkey. It's a God-send to political cartoonists.

And that sounds like an AWESOME thesis *_*.

Hopefully it will be fun (though there's lots of administrative stuff surrounding added a major to get out of the way first). Did blockade running make an actual difference in the South's situation, or only a pyschological difference? Or did it make very little difference at all, and simply become fixed in popular imagination because it sounded cool?
