Have you read The Lesbian Menace by Sherrie Inness? It's largely about how queer portrayals in fiction focused the straight community's reaction to the RL lesbian community, and is a very good read.
No, but clearly I'm going to have to look for it now. Thanks for the rec. (let me guess, one reaction was "lesbians are scary, but sometimes okay if they're only there for the pleasure of men - like in these novels, where they're dangerous and scary, but also often there to be hot for men.")
