Dude Wolverine is a fine native American Brave, like a Sioux or one of those Plains Indian tribes. (He even has an animal name) Jean would make a good uppity Yankee Doctor woman.
Read Dr. Grey Medicine WOman, who's love is split between the dashing a progressive Mr. SUmmers and her dusky Indian brave seeing her through the hard times as he husband is away to war. And then Scott returns to find his child bride's heart changed from the innocence she held before. And his respect for the noble savage is at odds with his personal honor.... Oh dear god... That is too horrible.I could write that novel in an hour.
Jubilee would probably dress like a boy, I mean she is that age. Ororo could be an agent of the Underground railroad. (The hot one whom Jean secretly has befriended, and lets African slaves escape through the back yard.
The Friends of Humanity could be one of those horrible abolish parties, or one of the honor guards of the Confederate army.
Beast could be a slave... I dunno I could see him as a very articulate and clever slave either escaped or otherwise. Bobby would also make a Southern Gentleman, living the high life before the war, stupid and impulsive and young.
Oooh and Kurt could be a priest on the Underground railroad...
The options multiply. I still can't figure who would be a good field hand type...
