And on a more serious note, last post I said I was toying with the idea of an OotP AU (one that would totally screw over Rowling's canon by melding it with my own pre-book five fanfic-verse. And fuck with the ending). The thing is, it would, in essence, be Denialfic. I'm not talking the Richie's-Still-Alive-Damnit! sort of Denialfic of Highlander fame, but the more insideous "Fuck-You-Your-New-Canon-Sucks-I'll-Write-My-Own" sort that is prevalent in, oh say, Buffy fic.
And while this is sort of accepted in a TV show fandom, where many writers work on the episodes and criticism is frequently directed at the way the Powers That Be handle things (hands up all who think the last season of The X-Files sucked), I'm not sure of the stance on it in book-based fandoms. (I know it happens, though. Just look at the "Slytherin Rising" series, which was very popular a year or so ago). See, I'm wondering, because some of my favourite Buffy fics are the alternate season sixes ("I will now write a version of season six in which the characters do not all begin acting like spoiled brats") and the alternate season sevens ("I'm gonna write a season seven where Spike doesn't get screwed over"). A lot of them are just more emotionally satisfying than those parts of the show were, just as a version of OotP which pays more attention to Remus and Sirius's relationship and Snape's spying activities (and slowly developing romance with McGonagall) and ends the way I wanted it to would be more satisfying to me.
But it would also completely reject things that are now part of Rowling's canon, simply 'cause I don't like them.
Of course, I have to start on my PotC thingy first, and I really, really should either finish that bloody X-Men Evolution fic or pull it from ff.net and stop taunting people with it's incompleteness.
