When reading old books where characters of the same gender where prone to grand declaration of love, my interpretation was always a mix of 'they felt more secure in expresing their feelings because the possibility of homosexuality didn't occure to them' and 'they were more enthousiastic in their description at the time.'
note that I'm a gen kind of personn. I tend to read Sirius and Remus as brohers for example. I also don't see why some people ship Sam and Jack from SG-1 appart from the lead male and female thing that I find ridiculous. I also hesitate a lot before reading Sam/Jack because even in fics the main body of it read like harlequin novels.
