Apollo and the Midnighter from The Authority got that reaction, too, with fangirls squeeing at the slashiness and other fans saying "Why do you keep saying they're gay when they're not?" until Warren Ellis finally had them kiss on panel, at which point he was deluged with "OMG, wait, they're gay?!?" fanmail. He apparently responded with something like, "Duh. So what?"
