I could say so much about this and how much I agree with you, but after dealing with this just last night...I really don't want to start ranting in your journal.
Oh, rant away. For one thing, it's always struck me that if someone truly believes sexual-romantic relationships are inherently less good/pure/noble/whatever than platonic ones, they must have a pretty dim view of heterosexual relationships as well as slash (or maybe they think all those people who say things like "my husband/wife is my best friend" are just deluded?).
I do sympathize with the fans who groan in agony when TPTB pair up a show's male and female leads, but that tends to be less "why are you making them have icky sex?" and more "why have they suddenly become pod people with no trace of their former personalities?"
