If you have the cash, both the Frank Miller Daredevil runs have been collected in trade paperback and are definitely worth getting - it's some of the best stuff Miller has ever written, and done long before he turned into a crazed right-wing parody of himself. The first three volumes are his first run (art and writing), the last has David Mazzucchelli on art. These stories set up a great deal of what happens in the Bendis run.
