etherati's Watchmen fics make me so very happy (and also afraid of posting my one sad little h/c fic when it's back from beta, because OMG, hers are gorgeous). The characterization, the prose, the mood... the zombies ^_^ Seriously, her zombie AU is probably my favorite Watchmen fic of all time, even more than spy's AU or theonlytwin's threesome fics.

Things that do not make me happy? LotR authors who like to throw around phrases like "the golden-haired elf" (Which one? That's, like, every elf in the movies and half the elves in the books) and "the young [noun]" instead of using the character's bloody name. Especially "the young [noun]" in close third. Teenagers? Do not think of themselves as young. 400-year-old elves? Definately don't think of themselves that way, even if 400 *is* young in eleven terms.

The Fluffle is filled with bliss when the Stevelet licks his face, but seems to be confused and distressed when I lick him. This clearly falls under the same "things I thought the cat would like, but which inexplicably distress him" category that putting butter on his nose did.

Descriptors are just... no. Just... no.

LotR, as I poke around at fics beyond my beloved "The Captain & The King", is proving to be as filled with epithet abuse as Magnificent Seven and Gundam Wing were/are (the braided boy, the uni-banged boy, the tracker, the gambler, the healer, etc. etc. ad naseum). I think maybe I need to once again break out that Batman/Superman "behold how stupid this sounds" example ficlet where every single one of Bruce and Clark's various names and epithets is used in quick in succession and it sounds like there's ten different people involved (The Man of Steel tenderly peeled back the Dark Knight's cowl. "Bruce," Kal El whispered, "I want you to let me love you. Is that so much to ask?" Batman jerked loose from Clark's grasp and stepped away from him. "I can't," the World's Greatest Detective said, his voice rough, and the Last Son of Krypton winced at the cold refusal in it. "Bruce," Superman repeated, almost pleading now..." you get the idea).

the kryptonian, the bat, the dark haired blue eyed man. The.. it's terrible. Nothing will get me to backspace out of fic faster than descriptors. DO NOT WANT!!!!

The sad part is that the parody example I made up could almost be a real fic, if I took out about two-three epithets.

Going back and forth between "Bruce" and "Batman" for no apparent reason is a minor but perpetual source of irritation for me in DCU fics. "Bruce" and "Batman" aren't just two different names for the same guy; they're two distinct personnas. It's annoying with superheroes in general, but especially with Batman. He even has a different *voice* depending on whether he's in "Bruce" mode or "Bat" mode!

However, Watchmen fic has given me a new, even more *argyourprosemustdiearg* example. Rorschach and Walter Kovac are not interchangeable names, especially not from Rorschach's pov (also, I don't care if one half of a pairing is literally six inches shorter and sixty pounds lighter than the other, canonically giving you the size differential most fandoms have to exaggerate and make up, I still don't want to see "the smaller man/"the larger man" or any other size comparisons more than about once a fic. Maybe once a chapter if it's a really long fic and the chapters are substantial).

Seriously, how hard is it to take three seconds to consider whose POV you're writing from and call characters what that person would call them? I MEAN REALLY.

I greatly enjoyed this paragraph, and I'm not entirely sure why.

We really thought he would like having butter on his nose. Instead, it made him panicked and miserable, much like opening plastic trash bags or vacuuming (Tony-kitty fears many, many things. Steve-kitty is fearless except when it comes to fireworks).

Aw d'aww, poor Tony-kitty. (Also in my head he is a cat with an arc reactor, which is fabulous.)

Well, he has a white patch on his chest in about the right place... (actually, he looks spookily like kitten!Tony in "Momentary Paws," which is amusing considering that we got him almost a year before that was written).

On a totally unrelated subject, if I wanted to read good Hank and Jan, what comics/trades would you recommend? :)

Avengers v3 #77 ("Whirlwinds") is probably one of my favorite issues for the two of them -- it features Hank and Jan on vacation in Vegas, before Disassembled (so you can be 100% no one involved is a skrull) and has them using their size changing powers in bed. Seriously, there is a shot of tiny Hank walking up betwen Jan's sweaty breasts (lying on her back) that is just about the porniest thing I've seen in a comicbook.

The storyline that shows the infamous "hitting Jan" moment is Avengers volume 1 #212-220-something (this stretch of issues also includes the Red Thong issue where Tony's identity is revealed).

There's also a deeply cracky but fun storyline in early volume 3 where Hank gets split into two Hanks ~~and there's Hank/Jan/Hank doppleganger pr0n~~ (sadly, not actually) and Jan and Triathlon have to reintegrate Hank back into one person in order to stop him from disintegrating. The resolution, confusingly, is in an Avengers Annual issue and not a regular issue, so if you're reading through volume 3 Hank kind of magically goes from being slit into a manic and a depressive half to being all fixed between one issue and the next, and you miss the scene where Jan goes inside his psyche to fix him ~~with her love~~ (mostly by refusing to fix him and making him fix himself).

I think I've seen that Vegas one... It was very Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman. "What do you want me to do, get a wetsuit and a flashlight?"
