Happy Memorial day, and fic challenge

In honor of Memorial Day and my sister getting commissioned topmorrow, I'd like to propose a fic challenge.

Write a fic of 1,000 words or more that portrays the military or a member of the military in a positive light. Any fandom, any character, any time period--it can be Sharpe and the Chosen Men, Jack Aubrey and the crew of the Sophie, the Marines and/or Air Force people from SGA or SG-1, the Howling Commandos, Hawkeye and BJ from MASH... even AUs would work fine (anyone who writes something with WW1 or WWII pilots gets my undying adoration). Art works as well.

Post the finished fic/art/thingy up on your journal on November 11th (Veteran's Day/Rememberance Day).

Oooh, I sort of want to do Chris Summers, with his boys growing up on a base.

Or maybe something about Bucky.

Will think about this. Great suggestion!

Bucky is always deserving of fic.

.... I write an AU WWII pilot game with a friend, does that count??

Anything with WWII fighter planes automatically counts. Double points if there are Spitfires.

HEEEEE. There are planes that fly underwater.... P-40s, B-25s and PV-2s/C-28 and C-47s. No Spits, though I think someone mentioned them once.

(it's a mercenary group.)

Congrats to your sister!

Sadly, I don't write, I just bunny. (http://tavella.livejournal.com/135558.html)

Awesomely creepy idea, thought it doesn't fit the challenge, which is to make the military look good (though the idea of Steve's cell covered in portraits is just.. both terribly sad and creepy while also making me go all, "Aw, Steve.").

It's even creepier/sader than [livejournal.com profile] seanchai's and my AU-bunny where Steve was kidnapped from the hospital by Red Skull and replaced with a cloned body--and has to watch Sharon and Bucky and Tony and the world fall apart over his "death" while powerless to help them, with Red Skull gloating the entire time (of course, because I'm incapable of doing anything that doesn't have a happy ending, he then bides his time until he's started to recover from being shot, knocks a guard out, and escapes, to show up on Sam's doorstep at three in the morning all, "Um, hi? I'm not actually dead.").

Ah, but you didn't even mention the best part, with the totally gratuitous open-heart surgery, and Red Skull being a mouth piece for every opinion that we don't like.

I didn't think it was possible, given how much I've always loved it, but I think Marvel may have reinvigorated my love for h/c in a way that fandom hasn't since I realized that other people watched Magnificent Seven.

To this day, Mag7 remains the perfect fandom, but I think Marvel may be the perfect fannish source material.

In my ideal world, NotTasha, Tipper, Sue Necessary, G.M. Atwater, BMT and the rest of the truly awesome Mag7 h/c and plotty genfic writers would all discover the Avengers and write hundreds of Ks worth of fic for them (while still continuing to write Mag7 stuff, of course).

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

That would be brilliant. Though at least a few of them would have to discover slash as well, since Avengers is one of those things that, like Starsky and Hutch, I find truly impossible to read as anything but slash.

I can totally do that! Got lots of military-esque fandoms.
