I've never really taken part of the Firefly fandom, but I love the show. I've shown it to pretty much all my friends and they like it as much as me. It never crossed my mind that the Alliance were "good guys", I always thaught that they were made of rich people and that the browncoats were mostly poorer people. That's my impression anyway.
