Sonnet for S.

This one's a companion to the other sonnet I wrote about a week ago.

I have one thought, and that one thought is thee
Whom I have lost and found and lost again
Beyond a veil that walled thy soul away
And stripped me both of lover and of friend.

No longer does another share my bed
or hold me in the dark when nightmares come
And wake us both with half-remembered dread
And spectres of the years we spent alone.

No comrade walks with me on moonlit nights,
Nor ever will again, now thou art gone.
For I remain behind, bereft of light,
To face what time remains to me alone

And wish in vain that heaven would let me
Play Orpheus to thy Eurydice.
