Excellent post, and I agree, just having those bits of representation can be so important when you're just finding out who you really are.

The way "queer" is defined in a lot of online discussions seems to be as much dependant on which other people you hang out with and what your politics are as who you're attracted to, like you can't be LGBTQ in isolation.

This is so true and makes me so bitter. I'm bi, but I'm also so shy that it's really hard for me to do social gatherings with people I don't know at all. Additionally, while some portions of my family of origin make it out like I'm some kind of radical extremist, I'm really just a regular old liberal in USAan terms, i.e. not leftist enough for most lesbian feminist groups. Fandom and other LiveJournal types have the only people in my life willing to take my bisexuality without a blink, which is why the whole "only straight girls write slash" brouhaha left me feeling so defeated, even though I'm not all that much of a slasher.
