My hope is that we can finish in time to participate in the big bang
I'm in exactly the same boat. I really want to participate in the big bang, but I don't want to use the last 20,000 words of Evil!Tony as my story, even though it would be allowed. I want to start writing it and proceed along with the group, you know? Not to mention that it's unreasonably to expect a beta to be able to edit 84,000 words in one month, which is what the big bang allows.
In theory, if I finish Evil!Tony by March 31 (a target for which I am still on schedule, even having set it in early January--yay!), I would only need to write 328 words per day to make 20,000, which should be no problem.
But at the same time, I'm not sure if it's a good idea for me to go from a truly epic fic that will have eaten more than a year of my life straight to a moderate epic fic that will eat three months. I have shorter fics in progress that it'd be nice to finish!
But...big bang would be fun. And I kind of want to steal my favorite parts of your Dresden Files/Avengers bunny and spin a new bunny out of it. And big bang would be the perfect excuse to write that fic. *g*
Lots of practice at writing long fic also helps
This is a very good point that I hadn't thought of before. I would guess that I write one fic over 10,000 words per year. And I've only ever written two or three over 30,000 words (I think). My original novel attempts were all longer, of course (usually 80,000 to 100,000 words), but I've been blocked on those for more than two years now. So I haven't got much practice at maintaining this kind of pace/focus.
I think at this point we're closing on over 1,000 pages of Steve/Tony fic over the past two years. That's, like, two-thirds of War & Peace.
This is so cool. *grins* And have I mentioned lately how fortunate Steve/Tony fandom is to have you and seanchai? It's so rare for small fandoms to have any truly long stories at all! You guys spoil us. <3
