Ultimates fails so much because it could have been so interesting instead of...what it is.

The painful knowledge of the awesome that Ultimates could have been (if people had actually been in character, if they're real backstories had been kept, etc.) was part of the inspiration for Classic-verse (the rest was how much we really wanted a Bruce Timm & Paul Dini style Toonverse to exist for the Avengers).
