Valjean pining to death always irks me when I re-read/re-watch because he basically dies for no reason other than to fulfill the "we must now have a tragic deathbed scene" dictates of Victorian fiction. He should have lived, damnit. Marius could have used a supportive father figure and Valjean is Cosette's only family other than Marius.

Maybe Marius's emotionally-abusive grandfather could have a tragic reconciling-with-Marius deathbed scene instead.
